Capri Island higlights and historical information
Capri, when a dream becomes Island; made of limestone and just over 10 square kilometers large. A suggestive island praised by many poets and writers, it has been inhabited since ancient times. Located in the center of the Mediterranean sea, it was an obligatory route for all merchant ships coming from east. To make it clearly visible, the Roman emperor Augustus had a large lighthouse built in the eastern part of the island at a height of 300 meters. + Show More - Read All +
After the death of Augustus, his adopted son and successor, the emperor Tiberius, fell in love with the island, he moved there to live and to keep in contact with the Senate, he erected a series of lighthouses, located all along the Sorrento coast until Rome; these were used with mirrors that reflected the sun's rays, to send messages and communicate with it. Tiberius also had twelve villas built; the most famous is villa Jovis; a structure of 7000 square meters which, besides being its residence, was the seat of the Roman government.
Not far from the latter, stands Villa Lysis, built in 1905 by Baron Jacques d’Adelsward-Fersen, descendant of the famous secret lover of Marie Antoinette of Austria, queen of France. Another villa of great value, is Villa San Michele, residence of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe who hosted many excellent personalities, first of all Eleonore Duse, La Divina. Among the places of great beauty and historical interest, via Krupp, a majestic street of steps, built by the tycoon of the steel factories Friedrich Alfred Krupp in 1900; also in the stretch of sea that goes from the blue grotto to Punta Carena, we can admire three sighting forts (Saracen forts) connected to a long stairways that reach the sea, and used in 1808
We cannot fail to mention Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island, which can be reached with a nice chair- lift ride; crossing and enjoying from above one of the most beautiful panoramas in the world. Last but not least, the Blue Grotto, made by the Romans as a nymphaeum with statues and mosaics, but considered, following the fall of the empire, an inauspicious place to avoid. It was the German writer Augusto Kopish, who in the 19th century rediscovered its beauty by praising it in his works.
